Best Free Packs & Add-Ons on the Minecraft Marketplace
The Minecraft Marketplace has 36,386+ items, and a surprising number of them cost exactly zero Minecoins. We're talking 203 free packs — skin packs, world templates, resource packs, and behavior-changing add-ons — all one-click installs that tie to your Microsoft account and work across every Bedrock device you own.
The catch? Most of them aren't great. Free content on the Marketplace ranges from genuinely excellent (full skin packs from major creators, world templates with hours of content) to bare-minimum efforts that got past review. This guide covers only the ones worth downloading, backed by real player ratings from tens of thousands of reviews.
How to Find Free Content on the Marketplace
The Minecraft Marketplace doesn't make it obvious where the free stuff lives. There's no prominent "Free" tab on the storefront — you have to filter for it or know where to look.
Your best options:
- MinecraftPal's catalog — browse all Marketplace items and filter by price to surface free content instantly, sorted by rating so the best floats to the top
- In-game Marketplace — scroll past the featured section and look for the "Free" category, which appears intermittently and rotates content
- Marketplace Pass rotation — the Marketplace Pass ($3.99/month) gives you access to a rotating selection of 150+ items. Not free-forever, but free-while-subscribed — and the selection is surprisingly good
- Seasonal promotions — Mojang drops free packs around holidays, game anniversaries, and major updates. These are usually time-limited but the items stay in your library permanently
The 203 free items break down roughly like this: 63 skin packs, 140 world templates, 25 resource packs, and 23 behavior packs. Not all of those are worth your time, which is why the rest of this article exists.
Best Free Skin Packs
Free skin packs are the most common free content on the Marketplace, and a few of them are genuinely standout. The top free skin packs have tens of thousands of ratings — comparable to popular paid packs — which tells you they're reaching a real audience, not just collecting dust.

The pattern with free skin packs: many are promotional tie-ins or creator showcases. Mojang and Microsoft use free packs to onboard new players into the Marketplace ecosystem — give away something good, and people come back to browse paid content. That's not cynical; it means the free skin packs often have higher production values than you'd expect, because they're essentially advertisements for their creators' paid work.
Browse all free skin packs on MinecraftPal to find more options beyond this list.
Best Free World Templates
Free world templates are where the real value hides. A good world template gives you hours of gameplay — adventure maps, survival challenges, pre-built creative worlds — for nothing. The best free worlds have production quality that matches paid content.

A few things to know about free world templates: they range from simple survival spawns to elaborate adventure maps with custom mechanics. The ones with high ratings and thousands of reviews have been stress-tested by the community. If a world template has 4+ stars and 500+ ratings, it's almost certainly worth the download — and since it's free, the risk is literally zero.
World templates are also the best way to understand what Bedrock's add-on system can do. Many free worlds include custom behavior packs that modify gameplay in surprising ways. Think of them as interactive demos of the Marketplace's capabilities.

Best Free Resource Packs
Resource packs change how Minecraft looks — textures, UI elements, sounds. Free resource packs on the Marketplace won't rival the best paid texture overhauls, but several are legitimately good and offer a real visual refresh without spending Minecoins.

Free resource packs are great for testing whether you even like texture pack changes before committing to a premium pack. Some players try a free pack, decide they prefer vanilla textures, and save themselves 990 Minecoins. Others discover that a visual overhaul transforms the game for them and upgrade to a more polished paid option. Either way, starting free is the smart move.
Best Free Add-Ons & Behavior Packs
Behavior packs are Bedrock's mod-lite system — they can add new mobs, change game mechanics, introduce custom items, and reshape the survival experience. Free behavior packs are rarer than free skins or worlds, but the ones that exist often pack genuine gameplay changes.

15 Year Party Supplies
by Minecraft · 4.8/5 (269,000 ratings) · Free
Celebrate Minecraft's 15 Year Anniversary with the party supplies add-on!
Free behavior packs often come from creators demonstrating what's possible with the Bedrock add-on system. They're proof-of-concept showcases that happen to be genuinely fun. For more powerful free add-ons outside the Marketplace, check MCPEDL — though those require manual installation and aren't curated like Marketplace content.
Marketplace Pass: "Free" With a Subscription
The Minecraft Marketplace Pass is $3.99/month and gives you access to a rotating catalog of 150+ items. It's not free in the traditional sense — you're renting access — but it dramatically changes the value equation for Marketplace content.
Here's the math: the average paid Marketplace item costs several hundred Minecoins. A Marketplace Pass subscription gives you access to 150+ items per month for $3.99. If you download and play even 3-4 packs per month, the per-item cost drops well below what you'd pay buying individually.
The downside is real: cancel the subscription and you lose access to everything you downloaded through the Pass. Items you unlock through the Pass aren't permanently yours unless you keep paying. For players who binge Marketplace content for a month and then move on, this might still be worth it — subscribe, download everything interesting, play through it, cancel. For ongoing access, you're paying indefinitely.
If you're curious about the Pass, we cover it in more depth in our Marketplace Pass guide. You can also check the Minecraft Wiki's Marketplace Pass page for the latest details on what's included.
Free vs Paid: What the Ratings Actually Say
Here's the question nobody asks directly: is free Marketplace content actually worse than paid content? We pulled the numbers from real rating data to find out.
Across items with at least 10 ratings:
- Free items — average rating of 4.40/5
- Paid items — average rating of 4.45/5
Paid content does rate slightly higher on average, which makes sense — creators invest more into content they're selling. But the gap is smaller than you'd expect. The best free items rate just as highly as the best paid items, and many free packs outperform mediocre paid ones.
The real difference isn't quality — it's variety. With 36,183 paid items versus 203 free ones, the paid catalog has far more options in every category. If you want a specific theme, style, or gameplay experience, you'll almost certainly find it in the paid catalog. The free selection is smaller but curated by natural selection: only the best free items get enough downloads and ratings to remain visible.
Our recommendation: start with the free packs in this guide, figure out what types of content you enjoy, and then use MinecraftPal's catalog to find paid options in those categories. You'll spend your Minecoins much more wisely when you already know what you like.
Making the Most of Free Marketplace Content
A few practical tips for getting value from free Marketplace packs:
- Check ratings before downloading. Even free items have an opportunity cost — your time. A free pack with 2 stars and 50 ratings is probably not worth the download. Focus on items with 4+ stars and hundreds of ratings.
- Watch for seasonal drops. Mojang releases free packs around holidays (Halloween, Christmas) and during major game events. These limited-time free packs are usually high quality and often come from top Marketplace creators.
- Try the Marketplace Pass free trial. If your platform offers a trial period, use it strategically — download the best items from the rotation, play through them, and decide if the subscription is worth continuing.
- Free packs install permanently. Unlike the Marketplace Pass rotation, a pack that's listed as free (0 Minecoins) stays in your library forever once you download it. If you see a free pack from a good creator, grab it even if you don't plan to use it immediately.
For more on how the Marketplace works, read our Marketplace guide. To browse the full free catalog, head to MinecraftPal and filter by price. For details on Minecoins and spending, see the official Minecoins FAQ.
The bottom line: 203 free items is a lot of content. Most of it is mediocre, but the best of it — the packs in this guide — rivals paid content in quality. Start here, build your library, and you'll have a solid Minecraft experience without spending a single Minecoin.
